Ranthambhore National Park

Safari Zone 1

Quick Identification

One of Ranthambhore's most densely forested zones, characterised by narrow valleys, steep hills, seasonal streams, grassy openings, and dry deciduous forests dominated by Dhonk, with Tendu, Jamun, Gular, and other native trees.

Where to Look

The safari begins at Singhdwar, marked by an old banyan tree. From Sultanpur Chauki, the route divides towards Gada Doob, Kala Pani, and Peela Pani. Gada Doob is a large water reservoir frequented by sambar, wild boar, and other herbivores. At Kharya Chataha, sambar are often seen licking mineral-rich saline soil. Experienced guides may also explore Tunti ka Nala, Raipur Baori, and Naya Kasta.

Tigress Territories

This zone is frequently shared by three tigresses, whose territories are generally centred around Singhdwar, Gada Doob and Kala Pani & Peela Pani. Tigresses traditionally use the same areas consistently across generations and tend to remain in them for longer periods; therefore, the focus is primarily on tigress territories.

Best Time to See

Summer is particularly rewarding for wildlife sightings because the valleys provide cool, shaded areas where animals seek refuge from the heat. During winter, areas such as Gada Doob and Dhoop Chowk can be especially productive.

Early mornings and late afternoons offer the best chances of seeing animals near waterholes, streams, and open grassy areas.

Behaviour to Watch

Tigers frequently use the valleys, waterholes, and forest edges to hunt sambar and wild boar. Sloth bears are also regularly encountered, particularly in the dense forest. Leopards may be seen on rocky slopes and cliffs. Watch for sambar licking mineral-rich soil at Kharya Chataha.

Interesting Fact

Before Sawai Madhopur was established in 1763, the villages of Sultanpur and Raipur were located here. Their relocation allowed the forest to regenerate naturally.
