Ranthambhore National Park

Safari Zone 3

Quick Identification

The most iconic safari zone of Ranthambhore, combining Ranthambhore Fort, Padam Talao, Rajbag Lake, Jogi Mahal, historic ruins, palaces, and spectacular wildlife. It is the landscape most often seen in photographs and wildlife documentaries. The sight of Jogi Mahal, with the magnificent Ranthambhore Fort in the background, creates one of the most spectacular landscapes in Ranthambhore. When a tiger appears in this setting, the scene becomes truly unmatched.

Where to Look

Begin at Jogi Mahal Gate and continue towards Padam Talao, the reserve's most celebrated lake. Look around Jogi Mahal, Rajbag Palace, Rajbag Lake, and the corridor towards Malik Talao for tigers, crocodiles, deer, and waterbirds. The Mandoop route and its artificial waterhole can also be productive, particularly during the winter months.

Tigress Territory

This zone is usually occupied by a single resident tigress whose territory is centred around Rajbag.

Best Time to See

Winter is especially rewarding because the open landscape provides excellent visibility, and tigers may be seen moving through the area throughout the day, often in beautiful natural light. Summer is equally rewarding because the availability of water attracts wildlife to the lakes and their surrounding areas.

Behaviour to Watch

Tigers frequently walk along the shores of Padam Talao and Rajbag Lake. This zone offers a rare opportunity to watch tigers chasing and hunting deer in an open landscape, a behaviour that is particularly characteristic of this area. Tigers may also cross the old submerged causeway near Rajbag Palace. Watch the rocky edges and lake margins for marsh crocodiles, while sambar, chital, and waterbirds are commonly seen around the wetlands.

Interesting Fact

The gate of Jogi Mahal was constructed between 1975 and 1980 under the guidance of Shri Fateh Singh Rathore. He incorporated ancient sculptures, carved stones and hero stones (Veergati memorials) into the walls of the gate.
